React Bits vs shadcn/ui in 2026: they do different jobs, and here's how they fit together

I make a different UI library (Tactile UI), so read this knowing that. "React Bits vs shadcn/ui" is a common search, but the two aren't really rivals: shadcn/ui gives you the plain parts of an app (buttons, dialogs, forms, tables), and React Bits gives you the moving parts of a website (animated text, backgrounds, effects). Plenty of projects use both. This post lays out what each one is, what it costs and how they differ, so you can see where each fits. Everything was checked on 3 November 2026 on their own sites, docs and GitHub. I compared what they publish, I didn't build the same page with both. If something is wrong, email me and I'll fix it.

The short version

  • shadcn/ui for the app itself: accessible, plain components you copy in and restyle. Free, MIT, 127.3k stars.
  • React Bits for the wow on top: 215+ free animated components and backgrounds, with paid tiers from $129 for more components, blocks and templates.
  • Both install through the shadcn CLI, so using them together is easy.

What actually differs

Plain or moving. shadcn/ui is about getting the boring parts right: keyboard, focus, screen readers, through Radix or Base UI underneath. React Bits is about movement. Its pieces lean on GSAP, Motion or WebGL, so a piece usually brings an animation library with it.

Licence. shadcn/ui is plain MIT. React Bits adds the Commons Clause, which says you can't sell the components themselves as a product. For using them in your own site or a client's, both are fine.

What the paid tiers buy. shadcn/ui has nothing to buy. React Bits' paid tiers add more components (230), page and app blocks (300 each), an agent kit and, at $349, 15 landing-page templates.

Theming. shadcn/ui is built around CSS variables, so a whole app can change look from one file. React Bits pieces are tuned one by one, which suits effects that sit on top of a page rather than a whole app.

Agents. Both work with Claude Code, Codex and Cursor through MCP and the shadcn registry, so your agent can add either by name.

Using both

A common setup: shadcn/ui for the app, a few React Bits pieces on the landing page. They don't fight, because shadcn/ui doesn't animate much and React Bits doesn't try to be a form library.

If neither fits

Both are React. If you want UI that behaves like a physical object, a dial that clicks, an odometer that carries, a switch with travel, that's what I make. Tactile pieces are one ES module and one stylesheet each, with React, Vue and Svelte wrappers, and 62 of them are free. tactileui.dev
