# Caption

A printed legend under a figure, a table or an image, numbered like a plate in a manual.

## Under a figure

Fig. 3The front panel at rest: three lamps lit, the fourth waiting for a run.

```
<figure>
  <img src="panel.png" alt="The front panel of the Lode node, four lamps in a row">
  <figcaption class="tui-caption">
    <span class="tui-caption__n">Fig. 3</span>The front panel at rest…
  </figcaption>
</figure>
```

The number is written, not generated, so it reads the same to everyone and can be linked to from the text. The caption says what to look at; the image's own `alt` says what is there.

## The full law

This page is a summary in plain words. The brain holds the law itself, in `printing.md`, written for an agent to follow. It ships with the Kit.
